Dear Parent and Guardians of Adam Scott Intermediate School (ASIS),
This message contains a lot of information. Please take time this week before the return to school to review it with your children.
We have been carefully reviewing the board’s protocols for the safe return of our students and staff. Thank you very much for your patience and thank you very much for the supportive messages that many of you have shared. We will continue to put forth our best effort and we appreciate the support and feedback.
Soon, we will be sending out an invitation for you to consider joining the ASIS Parent/Caregiver Council. Stay tuned!
If your child would like to join our informal ASIS (Adam Scott Intermediate School) Google Group, please email Ms. Murphy for the access code.
Stay tuned for our September Newsletter that is coming out this Friday!
The following procedures are based on school board, Ministry of Health and the Health Unit protocols. Please review the following routines with your children and please share any questions you may have with Principal, Jennifer Murphy at jennifer_murphy@kprdsb.ca
Each morning, before coming to school, students are requested to conduct the self-assessment checklist with the support of parents/caregivers to ensure they do not feel or present any illness symptoms.
Please stay home and seek the advice of a medical professional if you do experience any illness symptoms.
We will share this checklist in multiple ways for easy access.
School starts at 8:35 a.m. Students need to arrive each day on time. This is crucial to keeping everyone safe. Please review family routines and begin to practice this week so that that students do arrive on time.
Each class will have a specific spot on the yard to congregate in the morning before school at a safe, social distance. Staff will be supervising on the yard and will happily greet and guide students to their class area. There will also be field markers and signs. Please do not worry. We will be there to help you:)
Please do not arrive earlier than 8:20 a.m. Staff supervision begins at 8:20 a.m. It is important that there are not groups of students congregating before this time.
Students need to dress for the weather each day. Please check the news, test the temperature, and take the time to dress according to the forecast for the whole day. Students will need raincoats, umbrellas, warm jackets, sun hats, gloves, etc. as we will be going outside whenever possible.
Students do not need to wear a mask outside as long as they are at a safe, social distance from others.
When the bell rings, students should sanitize their hands before putting their masks on.
Please review and practice effective ways to carry hand sanitizer and to store masks in fanny packs or pockets each day. There will also be sanitizer at each doorway and in each classroom.
When the bell rings at 8:35 a.m., each teacher will bring their class into the school. This will be a carefully monitored and directed process. Students will move in class groupings at a distance from one another. We have lined the pavement to support this process and it turns out by chance that we have perfectly marked floor tiles in the school hallways to help guide us all to keep a safe distance from others!
We have designated doors for classes to minimize traffic.
Teachers will have hand sanitizer in the class for students for each time they enter the class and any time they need throughout the day.
Students will NOT be going home/out for lunch as per the board policy. Please ensure you are packing all the necessary snacks and lunch items to sustain oneself for the day. The cafeteria will NOT be open and vending machines will NOT be used.
We are working on a safe system to be able to eventually offer food through our nutrition program that we all love very much, but this will be reviewed thoroughly and with input from parents/caregivers before anything is offered.
If your family is in need of support to ensure your child has access to nutrition, please email the Principal, Jennifer Murphy so that we can arrange a safe plan. Please note, we are a judgement-free school. Our top priorities include making sure our students are safe, cared for, fed and ready to learn.
The yard area will be sectioned off for class cohorts to play in during recess. Classes will rotate through zones throughout the week so that each class has access over the course of the week to various areas.
Grade 7's will go for a 20 minute recess in the morning while grade 8's eat lunch at their desks in their classrooms and then we will switch in a controlled and safe manner. We will repeat this in the afternoon. Lunch times and recess breaks will be monitored by staff on supervision.
Our dream is to fundraise so that we can build an outdoor learning space with a rock circle and garden and a learning shelter with picnic tables-eventually. We look forward to your support with this dream and vision.
Students are expected to travel through the hallways to go outside for recess wearing their masks and will have to either wear them during recess or put them in a pocket- as per the board policy.
Students and staff will wear their masks inside the school at all times. Please review this and practise this so you are ready.
We will be working on a bathroom schedule so that each class has access to the washrooms and so that students who need to access the washroom apart from the class schedule may do so. We have access to 3 bathrooms-Male, Female and Gender Neutral-this includes a universal fully accessible washroom. The use of washrooms will be limited to only our Intermediate School to limit cross-contamination.
Students will remain in their classrooms and specialist teachers such as English for French Immersion or Core French teachers will come to their classrooms. We have worked very hard to create as simple of a schedule as possible to reduce and limit cross-contamination as much as possible.
We will offer music in second term. We hope that we can return to offering our wonderful instrumental music program in our new music room as soon as Covid is no longer a risk.
Whenever possible and appropriate, we will engage our students in learning outside. There are many wonderful local places that we can walk to! We will follow board policies and inform parents/caregivers of any walking excursions ahead of time and seek parent/caregiver permission when distances surpass the policy agreement of 1.6 k.m. Any creative suggestions are welcome!
Please ensure students wear comfortable, appropriate footwear to be active and safe. Again, we are a judgement-free school. If you require support to ensure your child has appropriate footwear, please contact the Principal, Jennifer Murphy.
At the end of the day, staff will bring their classes outside to the yard and to their assigned lines/areas for dismissal at 2:55 p.m. Students are expected to get on to their busses or head home immediately. There is no option for students staying at the school after dismissal.
Water fountains will NOT be available for students to drink out of, but we have filling stations that will be open. We are asking students to bring a filled, reusable water bottle each day.
Please ensure your child comes to school with the necessary tools for learning including pencils, sharpener, calculator, eraser, etc. Ideally, each child will have a small scrunch bag to carry their items which they can put on the back of their chair. The smaller the better, as space is, of course, at a premium. Again, we are a no-judgement zone. If your child requires support to have access to the necessary learning tools/materials, please email the Principal, Jennifer Murphy.
If a student or staff member becomes sick or shows possible Covid symptoms, they will be moved to a room to sit in isolation and parents/caregivers will be notified to pick up the student right away.
Please ensure contact information is up to date.
Please inform the secretary, Tracy Hall, if your contact information and emergency contacts have changed at tracy_hall@kprdsb.ca
Please take some time to read this over and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to email at jennifer_murphy@kprdsb.ca
Again, thank you for all your support, patience, and consideration as we make every effort to return to school in a safe way.
